A classroom that publishes

“This job, teaching, is just journalism for a smaller audience.” Students in my classes report, broadcast, publish and perform, and almost everything they make goes out into the world.

WACS is the school’s student-run news, video and social media operation. Students pitch, report, produce and publish, and they run it like a newsroom.

How the newsroom is organized

Students take roles they’re interested in, and there’s always room to invent a new one.

WACS · Interactive design

Alumni Wall of Fame

An interactive touchscreen display at Alden High School that honors the school’s Distinguished Alumni. A WACS student designed the first version in spring 2025, teaching herself Figma with little more than a nudge from me, and WACS students produced the video profiles of the honorees. This fall we refreshed the design so it flows better and draws in people walking by.

Mentor podcasts

After reading Tuesdays with Morrie, students choose the person who has shaped them most, interview them, and publish the conversation on a website the class designs. Six collections since 2022.

PRISM

PRISM is Alden High School’s Gender-Sexuality Alliance, a club that brings LGBTQ+ and allied students together to build community. I’ve advised it since 2021 and co-advise it now with social studies teacher Jamie Williams.

  • Every year: the GLYS Youth Leadership Conference and the Buffalo Pride Parade
  • Pride in the Park, an annual celebration in Alden’s town park
  • Movie nights, including a 2026 screening with GSAs from neighboring schools
  • A PRISM member won EmbraceWNY’s 2025 Cover Page Contest

On WACS

WACS students have covered the club since its first year with me.
